Once every two and a half to three years, the Hindu calendar does something rare. It adds an extra month. And within that extra month, every single Tithi carries a weight that the same Tithi in any other month simply does not.

Varada Chaturthi 2026 falls inside that extra month.

That combination, the most powerful Ganesha Chaturthi of the year landing within Adhik Maas, is what makes this particular observance worth understanding fully before it arrives.

Varada Chaturthi 2026: Date and Timing

Varada Chaturthi 2026 falls on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

The Chaturthi Tithi begins at 2:18 PM IST on 19 May and ends at 11:06 AM IST on 20 May. The most auspicious window for puja is the Madhyahna Muhurat, the midday period, which runs from 10:56 AM to 11:06 AM IST on 20 May.

For NRIs, that window converts approximately to:

  • London (BST): 6:26 AM to 6:36 AM
  • New York (EDT): 1:26 AM to 1:36 AM
  • Toronto (EDT): 1:26 AM to 1:36 AM
  • Melbourne (AEST): 3:26 PM to 3:36 PM
  • Sydney (AEST): 3:26 PM to 3:36 PM

If the Madhyahna window is not practical for your timezone or schedule, the Chaturthi Tithi holds its energy through the full day. A sincere puja performed in the evening carries genuine merit. The Muhurat window is optimal, not exclusive.

What Varada Chaturthi Actually Means

The name breaks down simply. Varada means the bestower of boons, the giver of blessings. Chaturthi is the fourth lunar day, the day that belongs to Ganesha in every month of the Hindu calendar.

Varada Chaturthi is specifically associated with Varada Ganapati, one of the eight incarnations of Ganesha described in the Mudgala Purana. These eight forms are collectively known as Ashta Vinayaka, and each carries a distinct quality.

Vakratunda dissolves ego. Ekadanta teaches focus. Mahodara removes illusion. Lambodara holds all of creation within himself. But Varada Ganapati is the form that gives. The form specifically invoked when devotees approach with a genuine, righteous desire and offer it with surrender and sincerity.

This is why the day matters. It is not just a Ganesha Chaturthi. It is the Chaturthi of the giving form.

Why Varada Chaturthi 2026 Is Especially Powerful

Most years, Varada Chaturthi falls in the regular Jyeshtha month. In 2026, there are two Jyeshtha months because Adhik Maas lands within Jyeshtha. The Hindu calendar for Samvat 2083 runs 13 months in total.

The Shukla Chaturthi of Adhik Maas is specifically named Varada Chaturthi in the Mudgala Purana. And the Ganesha Purana adds something significant: because Lord Vishnu claimed Adhik Maas as his own divine manifestation (which is why the month is also called Purushottam Maas), worshipping Ganesha during it carries the combined blessings of both Ganesha and Vishnu's Purushottama form.

The Bhavishya Purana states this clearly: observing the Varada Vinayaka Chaturthi Vrat during Adhik Maas brings greater merit than all other Chaturthis of the year. The scriptures further describe that this Vrat helps clear karmic defects accumulated across past lives, not just obstacles of the present.

Two deities. One Chaturthi. One rare convergence that will not repeat for another two and a half years.

How Varada Chaturthi Differs from Ganesh Chaturthi

A common question, especially among younger diaspora households, is whether Varada Chaturthi and Ganesh Chaturthi are the same observance.

They are not.

Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Siddhivinayaka Chaturthi, is the annual celebration of Ganesha's birth and falls in the month of Bhadrapada (August or September). It is a 10-day public festival in Maharashtra and a major household observance across India.

Varada Chaturthi is the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of Jyeshtha month. It is a Vrat-based observance, more personal and contemplative. Where Ganesh Chaturthi is a celebration, Varada Chaturthi is an asking. It is specifically oriented toward bringing desires, obstacles, and requests to the Varada form of Ganesha with sincerity and surrender.

Both are powerful. They serve different purposes.

Puja Vidhi: How to Observe Varada Chaturthi

Preparation

Begin with a bath before starting the puja. Change into clean clothes. Clean the puja area and place a fresh cloth beneath the Ganesha idol or image. If you do not have a murti at home, a printed image placed on a clean cloth at an elevated surface is fully acceptable.

What to Offer

The traditional offerings for Varada Chaturthi are:

  • 21 blades of Durva grass (three-bladed variety is traditional)
  • Yellow and red flowers
  • Modak or laddoo
  • Jaggery and coconut
  • Sandalwood paste or haldi-kumkum
  • A lit diya with ghee or sesame oil

For NRI households where some of these are not easily available, work with what you have. A diya, a single flower, and modak placed with clear intention is sufficient. The Sankalp, the sincere inner statement of why you are sitting in front of Ganesha on this day, carries more weight than the completeness of the offering list.

The Mantra

The primary mantra for Varada Chaturthi is:

Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva Kaaryeshu Sarvada

Chant 21 or 108 times. Use a mala if you have one. If not, count on your fingers, or simply chant with full attention without counting. Presence matters more than precision.

The Vrat Katha

Reading or listening to the Varada Chaturthi Vrat Katha in the afternoon is considered part of completing the Vrat. The Katha is rooted in the Mudgala Purana and describes the origin and significance of the observance. Most temple YouTube channels carry an audio version if you do not have the text at home.

Fasting

Traditional observance involves fasting through the day and breaking it in the evening after completing the puja. Fruit and milk are permitted. If a full fast is not possible due to work, health conditions, or other commitments, a partial fast is acceptable, meaning no grain and no non-vegetarian food through the day.

Parana: Breaking the Fast

According to the Mudgala Purana, the fast is formally broken on the Panchami Tithi, the fifth lunar day, which falls on 21 May 2026. Ideally this happens in the presence of or after offering to a Brahmin, or after feeding someone in need. For NRI households, donating to a food charity or offering prasad to a neighbour before eating is in the full spirit of this requirement.

What to Ask For on Varada Chaturthi

Varada Ganapati responds to righteous desires, meaning those rooted in genuine need and dharmic intent rather than ego or greed. The tradition draws a clear distinction between desire that comes from grasping and desire that comes from genuine need and honest purpose.

Health, clarity in relationships, career obstacles, financial blocks, decisions that have been stuck for too long, spiritual growth and direction. These are all appropriate to bring to Varada Ganapati.

The traditional framing is this: state the obstacle clearly, surrender the attachment to the specific outcome, and ask for the path to open. That is what the Varada form is specifically invoked for. Not a demand for a result. A request for the door to open.

Varada Chaturthi for NRIs: Observing It From Abroad

Living outside India does not reduce the merit of this observance. The classical tradition is consistent on this point: the Chaturthi Tithi holds its energy globally. NRIs in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia can observe the puja and Vrat completely from wherever they are.

A few practical notes for diaspora households:

If open flame is not permitted in your apartment or triggers smoke detectors, an LED diya is Shastra-permitted. The scriptural tradition consistently holds that Sankalp and intention carry the spiritual weight, not the exact form of the flame.

If you do not have a dedicated puja room, a shelf in the northeast corner of the living room or on the east wall is fully appropriate. Keep it elevated above floor level and use a clean cloth as the base.

If modak is not available at a nearby Indian store, any sweet offering made with clean hands and offered with intention is acceptable.

The tradition asks for continuity of intention, not perfection of form.

After Varada Chaturthi: The Rest of Adhik Maas

Varada Chaturthi on 20 May opens the Shukla Paksha of Adhik Jyeshtha. The days following it carry heightened spiritual momentum, particularly for Vishnu worship and personal practice through the remainder of Malmas, which runs until 15 June 2026.

Maintaining a daily diya, chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times, and performing at least one act of charity each week through the month are the practices most consistently recommended across classical lineages for the Adhik Maas period.

For a sign-by-sign view of how the rest of this month looks as we move through this rare double-Jyeshtha period, the monthly horoscope covers all 12 Rashis with full Vedic framing.

The Larger Truth About This Observance

Ganesha is Pratham Pujya, the first among all deities to be worshipped. He is invoked before any ritual, any new beginning, any major decision, because he sits at the threshold. The one who controls access. The one who can open the door or keep it shut.

On a regular Chaturthi, you come to the threshold and knock. On Varada Chaturthi during Adhik Maas, the tradition says the door is already open wider than it has been all year.

The scriptures make strong claims about this observance. Devotees who observe the Vrat with full faith become free from obstacles and attain wealth, progeny, fame, and longevity. That the merit of this Chaturthi is greater than all other Chaturthis of the year.

What the tradition asks for in return is straightforward. Come with a genuine desire. Approach with humility. Surrender the outcome. Light a diya. Say the mantra with attention.

That is the full requirement. And that is fully within reach from any apartment in any city in the world.
